How Copilot sees your data
When you invoke Microsoft Copilot in Word or Excel, it receives the full document as context — including every name, email address, IBAN, patient record, or contract clause on the page. Copilot sends this to Microsoft's cloud AI infrastructure for processing.
Under GDPR Art. 28, using a cloud AI processor to process personal data without a documented data processing agreement (DPA) and appropriate safeguards is a compliance violation — even if Copilot is Microsoft's own product.
Risk Signal
20% of organisations using shadow AI have already experienced a data breach linked to unapproved AI tools. Microsoft 365 Copilot is licensed software — but the data sent to it may not be adequately protected at the document level.

Beyond the Office Add-in, both products expose a Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server that intercepts AI prompts in real time. Your prompts are anonymized before the AI reads them — and the AI's response is automatically deanonymized before you see it. You always read real names and real data. The AI never sees PII.
